Commercial Electrician
Commercial electricians are responsible for installing and maintaining electrical devices in commercial buildings, including field service calls. They are employed by a variety of companies and organizations, but primarily by utility companies. Commercial electricians must be professionally-trained via a technical or trade school or a professional organization, and many states have additional requirements, including a drug screen, background check, and driving record, as electricians generally operate a company/state vehicle. Generally, those in this position have at least seven years of experience in electrical work.
Commercial electricians are responsible for understanding many types of electrical systems and performing a wide range of tasks, including: planning, diagramming, and installing electrical systems, including conduits; running electrical wiring; wiring instruments which control power units within buildings; installing lighting and heating units; using electrical test meters; ascertaining compatibility and safety of various electrical components; installing brand-new electrical systems and ensuring their proper performance; locating system breaks; and locating and solving various electrical problems.
